To exceed the high&nbsp;expectations of the&nbsp;discerning customer, the most stringent QC standards must be met.<\/b><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">A technically advanced mint production facility requires the use&nbsp;of the best possible technologies to achieve the desired level of quality&nbsp;inspection. For one&nbsp;coin, medal and bullion producer, using the outdated naked&nbsp;eye method to identify imperceptible imperfections for an exclusive series of colour&nbsp;enhanced&nbsp;coins marking a special anniversary was no longer adequate. Active8&nbsp;Robots was invited to:<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;\u00b7 carry out an in-depth appraisal of the facility;<br class=\"\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;\u00b7 to produce an authoritative report detailing recommendations, implications, projections and benefits;<br class=\"\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;\u00b7 set out the roadmap for achieving the vision.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">The primary goal was to&nbsp;improve the existing quality inspection&nbsp;control process beyond current standards without compromising production rates.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Secondary goals included: enhancing manufacturing speeds; reducing&nbsp;labour dependency and associated costs; and automating the dull repetitive tasks&nbsp;performed by humans to enable redeployment to roles that were more cognitive&nbsp;and variable in nature.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Upon review of the proposal presented by Active8 Robots it was eagerly&nbsp;accepted that all of the above would be satisfied with the designed solution. The&nbsp;engineering team was subsequently invited to develop the automated robotic&nbsp;press tending solution and integrate it with the coin producer\u2019s existing&nbsp;systems.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">This innovative pad-printing cell comprised a fully safe,&nbsp;unguarded collaborative robot system that could be loaded with up to eight&nbsp;hours of product whilst&nbsp;running unattended. It incorporated triple-function&nbsp;end-of-arm-tooling to maximise productive robot movement and two high-end&nbsp;vision systems by Keyence &#8211;&nbsp;one for sending data to the robot and the other for&nbsp;quality inspection.&nbsp;Multiple programs were specially developed to accommodate a wide range&nbsp;of coin&nbsp;sizes and designs.<br><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4d01da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c4d01da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">How it works<\/h1>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-97abe78 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"97abe78\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 The robot picks a tray of coins from the infeed rack and places it in\u00a0the pick inspection jig.<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 The first vision system, located above the tray, finds a valid target coin\u00a0and sends location co-ordinates and rotary orientation data to the robot.<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 Using a vacuum suction cup, the coin is picked from the top face and\u00a0placed into an orientation jig to correct rotational alignment.<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 The coin is re-picked and placed into the pad-printing vice for\u00a0printing.<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 On completion of the print cycle, the coin is delicately removed from\u00a0the vice using a two-finger pneumatic parallel gripper, that picks it from the\u00a0sides to\u00a0avoid damaging the freshly printed surface.<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 The coin passes through the second vision station that carries out quality\u00a0control checks for colour variation and saturation, image position, paint\u00a0smudges,\u00a0shadowing, scratches, dirt and grease<br class=\"\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00b7 Finally, the coin is judged to be either a pass or a fail and is\u00a0subsequently placed in the corresponding outfeed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2899dd8 elementor-widget and fully integrated by the\u00a0Active8 Robots engineering team, successfully removed the need for an operative\u00a0to carry\u00a0out quality control using the outdated and subjective visual\u00a0inspection method.\u00a0The key advantage of using sophisticated machine vision systems for\u00a0inspection is that the quality check process is objective, consistent and\u00a0reliable.\u00a0This resulted in better\u00a0consistency of output quality, faster cycle times and\u00a0lower labour costs.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>Furthermore, the seamless
